The very first Toyota Hilux began production in march of 1968. This model was known as the RN10 and came in a short wheelbase model with a 1.5L engine, this w2as later replaced with a 1.6L engine in 1971. Early 1969 saw the addition of a long wheelbase version to the lineup.

The second generation of the Hilux was released in 1972 as the RN20 model. This model was more comfortable than previous versions and included many exterior visual updates. In 1975 the Hilux went through a major revamp in styling. It was made to be both larger and much more luxurious than previous models.

In 1978 Toyota introduced the third generation of the Hilux, with a four wheel drive option introduced in early 1979. The four wheel drive versions included a solid front axle and leaf suspension setup.

Mid 1983 saw the introduction of the fourth generation of the Hilux. Included in the lineup for the first time was a Xtracab option which was a two row extended cab version for more seating room in the cab. All through the life of the model it saw continued improvements of both the engines and suspensions. In 1986 the solid front axle was changed over to a independent front suspension setup.

In 1988 Toyota introduced the fifth generation of the Hilux. The Xtracab options now came with what were called jump seats that folded up when not in use to allow for more room behind the front seats.

The sixth generation of the Hilux started in 1995. This generation change saw many badge changes across the market as well as numerous engine and suspension options.

In 2005 the Hilux saw the introduction of the seventh generation. This version increased in size and was now classified as a mid sized pick up. A facelift version was released in 2008 which added sleeker lines and a smoother appearance to the vehicle.

Throughout its lifespan the Hilux has built up a reputation for being sturdy, reliable and even been coined as being virtually indestructible.

Perodua Alza M2 Edition: Limited edition with new colour

Perodua has released the Alza M2 Edition, which will be limited to 500 units. It will be open for booking at all Perodua sales outlets beginning 1st April with an on the road price of RM69,990, the same price as the Alza Advanced Version, which it’s based on.

First unveiled by former Tun Mahathir Mohamad in January when he visited Perodua’s Rawang facility, the M2 Edition is named after the code name “M2″ given to the second national car project, which was later renamed Perodua. Review of the Myvi Perodua, a Malaysian Car

Standing at 1.3 litres of engine capacity, the 'Perodua Myvi' remains the top choice when it comes to buying a car. Especially at entry level, most 'Malaysians' seem to lean towards this particular model. I, myself drive one. And I am about to tell you what it feels like driving one, after 3 months.

I think that it the price of RM40,000 (give and take) for a small car like this is a little overpriced. But, the plus points of the 'Myvi' is its spacious compartments inside. The interior can even cater to a giant 6 footer, I believe. Your head will never have to bump against the roof anymore.

Driving experience when on the 'Myvi' is like driving a 'Mini Cooper' (I have never driven one yet). Power steering makes it effective at turning, with its small dimension. Talking about car size, it is relatively very easy to park. Personally, I do not need to change gears from reverse to drive more than twice. That, I think is the biggest advantage a 1.3 litres capacity car can provide; the small size advantage (yet decent engine performance).

You will need to refuel every 350-400km for RM60 (give and take for 'RON95' petrol). Always diligently applying overdrive only when necessary, inflating tyre pressures to 220kPa, letting the 'Myvi' "roll" most of the time on road; these are some of the practices that make up the statistic for the RM60 fuel price tag. For the overdrive part, the car is driven from 0-60kph(overdrive off). Higher than that speed, I always turn the overdrive on. Long distances can make your 'Myvi' save a lot. Driving a great distance like 200km nonstop on a highway only takes up half of your fuel tank.

Acceleration for the 'Myvi' is rather "poor". As it runs on automatic transmission, that might explain. But, in most cases, I find that switching to 'OD off' helps a ton. Then again, I do not rely on this for overtaking cars. Automatic cars are rather more suited for comfortable and highway and traffic jams driving. Note that I had been driving the 1.3 litres engine capacity cars with manual transmission, where acceleration is the major strength.

Overall, for its price, comfort, maneuverability and capacity, it is worth taking a test drive on the 'Myvi'. It has its own reasons for one of the top national cars here in Malaysia. Although I will never understand its motto at the back that says "Building Cars People First". Good luck.

All-new Picanto Design Story

A new concept in ‘Smart Premium

The main concept of the exterior of the All-new Picanto is Distinct & Modern. In other words, highly individual styling and differentiated elements based on clearly distinct modernity give a new identity to this compact car. Mr. Park said “Being the first to apply the projection type and DRL to the headlamp of a compact car was a new challenge to me as a designer. Ordinarily, the headlamp, often regarded as the eye of the car, was designed to look sharp and pointed, but in view of the fact that it is a compact car, I also took the cute and friendly image into consideration and applied diverse ideas.”

The side of new Picanto stressed simple sportiness with a speedy structure, and also placed emphasis on simple lines and the abundant fender volume to the fullest to render a stable image.

Nissan Fuga as a Perdana Replacement

Proton signs MoU with Nissan Motor Co Ltd on collaboration and platform/powertrain licensing

Proton has announced to Bursa Malaysia that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Nissan Motor Co Ltd of Japan to conduct feasibility studies on specific areas of cooperation between the two parties, including the potential use of Nissan platforms and powertrains. Feasibility studies will begin today and are expected to end by the 30th of April 2011 – about 2 months time.

This is the first time we’ve heard officially of Proton and the Renault-Nissan Alliance working together since they tied up in a three way relationship of sorts with Genii capital in F1. We’ve heard talks in the past about Proton looking into Nissan platforms and powertrains for its new global compact car, previewed as the Proton EMAS some time ago. Two versions of the Proton EMAS are planned – an everyday car under the Proton badge and another sportier, more powerful and premium version under the Lotus badge.

We also hear that Proton will also be using the Nissan Fuga as a Perdana replacement model for senior government personnel usage only, and the Nissan Fuga has been spotted in the Proton COE carpark in the last few months.
